Flat roofs are nearly horizontal in pitch, with the slightest slope to allow water to drain, rather than sit, on top of the roof. In this case, this Richmond homeowner opted for a TPO, or single-ply roof. 


The main advantages of this type of flat roof are its easy installation and cleanup process; great performance in all weather conditions; and its resistance to punctures, tears, chemical spills, oil, and sunlight. 


The main disadvantage of this flat roof membrane is that any puncture or tear, such as from a piercing tree limb, could threaten the entire underlying structure. Its color and texture also noticeably change over time.
