Picture Window Replacement

PICTURE WINDOW REPLACEMENT IN RICHMOND, VA

A picture window is a stationary window that is usually large and offers ample natural light into a home. Picture windows are typically placed strategically to frame the outdoors, and they come in custom sizes and designs to fit your needs and wants.

What are the key benefits of picture windows?

While they won't open, picture windows have many benefits, including making a room look bigger. They can be used to illuminate areas like an attic, garage or stairway where a window that opens isn’t necessary. Or, picture windows can accent a larger spread of casement or double hung windows to add more height in a larger space. Plus, they let in plenty of natural light and an unobstructed view. They're also ranked well for energy efficiency since they can't open or close, preventing the opportunity for air infiltration.

What home style is best suited for picture windows?

Due to their versatility, picture windows are suited for all homes, though if you rely on your windows for air ventilation, they may not be the right choice for you. Alternatively, you can pair a picture window with casement or double hung windows, to enjoy the views while getting the ventilation your home needs.

What to Expect During a Window Replacement with Retex

Getting your home's windows replaced can be a big home exterior project to plan, budget, and manage. To take any questions or guesses out of the equation, we want you to know what would entail when you choose Retex Roofing & Exteriors for your window replacement process.

Here's what you can expect during our Day-Of Install process:

1. Preparation. Our crews will roll out tarps around your home and place drop cloths inside as needed, to ease the cleanup process.

2. Tear-Off. They will then remove your existing windows and prepare the slots for replacement windows.

3. Window Installation. This step includes the installation of your windows with manufacturer-approved fasteners and hardware, as well as shimming as needed to ensure the windows are secure, plumb, and level. At this point, the crew will also use spray foam to air seal your windows’ edges.

4. Detail Work. The crew will replace trim and clad your windows’ exteriors with aluminum as needed. They will also caulk around your windows to ensure a smooth and clean finish.

5. Cleanup. The crew will take time to clean your yard of debris, including your old windows, nails, and any plastic or paper waste. They will run a nail rake 2-3 times throughout your yard to ensure a clean and safe environment. They will wrap up the project by hauling away and disposing of debris.

FAQs:

Popular Window Questions

Got a question? We're here to help.

  • Why Should I Replace My Windows?

The most common reasons to replace your windows are the seals between panes are starting to fail or they are allowing outside air to get inside. Seal failure between panes causes the gas to leak out, which lowers the overall energy efficiency of the window. It can also cause the window to look cloudy due to moisture getting between those panes. Outside air leak is most noticeable in the winter months when you can feel a cold draft in different rooms of your home.

  • How Long Do New Windows Last?

It depends on the type and quality of windows you buy. A mid-grade vinyl window typically lasts about 30 to 40 years before it starts to lose its efficiency, while a high-end wood window with vinyl exterior cladding will generally last around 50 years. A majority of manufacturers offer lifetime warranties to cover issues such as seal failure or broken glass.

  • Are New Windows Energy-Efficient?

    Short answer: Yes.

The manufacturer is the biggest factor to consider here. Some windows that are “builder grade” quality are made to look good and be functional without providing the best energy efficiency for your home. However, most windows today are designed with better glass seals, thicker frames, and insulated edges.

Installation is another big factor, as a poorly installed window will be just as drafty as a cheap, old window due to air leaking around the edges.

  • Will New Windows Change How My Home Looks?

They can if you want them to. Windows have the power to massively change your home’s curb appeal by using different colors, materials, or styles, and adding windows will change how much light comes into your home.
