The Disadvantages Of Metal Roofs

Metal roofs come with lots of benefits – they’re environmentally friendly, super durable, and last 3-4x their asphalt shingle roof counterparts – which is why we’re seeing a rise in homeowners opting for this roofing material.


But what are the disadvantages of a metal roof?

Metal roofs are more expensive upfront. Metal roofs cost between 3-5 times as much as their asphalt shingle roof counterparts. The higher cost is due to the higher level of skills required to install these roofing systems correctly, as well as the material itself. However, metal roofing systems will last at least 50 years if well maintained – way longer than their shingle counterparts, which typically last between 17 to 25 years. From this perspective, a metal roof is a better investment if you plan to stay in your home for a long time.


Metal roofs are slippery, especially when wet.
This disadvantage comes into play if/when you try to climb on your roof or clean your gutters. While helpful for sliding snow off during the winter, the slipperiness of these roofs can be dangerous for homeowners to scale. Take caution and wear a good pair of boots with grip if you’re trying to access your metal roof. 


Metal roofs can be difficult to repair.
If, for example, your metal roof sustains storm damage, the difficulty of the repair and skill required to do it correctly will make it more expensive to repair than an asphalt shingle roof repair. 



Metal roofs can be dented.
Though metal panels today are designed to withstand decades of severe weather, large hail or fallen tree limbs and branches can dent them. This disadvantage depends on the type of metal roof installed, too. Aluminum and copper metal roofs, for example, are more susceptible to dents as they’re softer metals than steel metal roofs. 


Finally, let’s debunk the noise factor.
People often wonder if metal roofs are noisier than other roofing materials during a heavy rain or thunderstorm. While some may list this noise factor as a “con,” a properly insulated metal roof – and well-insulated attic space, too – will minimize any noise you hear from a passing storm. And, for some homeowners, the sounds they hear during a rainstorm from their metal roofs can be soothing. It really depends on your preference!


While we’ve culled together these five disadvantages of metal roofs, these cons are far outweighed by the pros of having a metal roof. Metal roofs are more environmentally friendly, with most made from at least 50% recycled metals and 100% recyclable upon their removal. They also last for at least 50 years, meaning less waste over time. They are energy efficient, reflecting the sun’s heat away from your home year-round but especially during the summer. And they are super stylish and versatile, with more than 100 colors of metal roofs available.
