Nature slate shingles are a premium product in the roofing industry, known for their 100-year potential lifespan.

Slate is metamorphic rock that is derived from volcanic ash and clay. It’s super durable, waterproof, and fire-proof. Plus, as a natural product, every piece of slate is slightly different than the next.

The two major drawbacks of this roofing material are its price tag and its weight. A slate roof typically costs about six times what an architectural shingle roof costs, and it requires a higher level of craftsmanship to properly install. The second drawback is the weight of the roof, which comes into play with a building’s original, foundational design. A home not designed for a slate roof will most likely not be able to withstand the added weight.
