An acronym for Louisiana-Pacific, the manufacturing company behind SmartSide, LP offers a home exterior wood siding option without the maintenance or cost attached to your standard wood. Wax, resin, zinc borate, and other binders keep the wood protected and resistant to insects and rot. 

Maintenance includes rinsing any dust, dirt, or debris with a garden hose, cloth, sponge, or soft brush; don’t power-wash LP, as it may cause moisture intrusion, discoloration, and damage to the paint. Its cedar base means it’s not fire-resistant, but it is considered one of the greener siding options.

Pricing wise, it’s more expensive than vinyl but cheaper than HardiePlank. It comes in a variety of prefinished color options, too.
