Storm Damage & Homeowners Insurance: Will My Premium Go Up If I File A Claim?

Katelyn Lewis • July 11, 2022

When you're dealing with potential storm damage and debating whether to get your homeowners' insurance involved, you may question whether filing your claim will cause your insurance premium to go up.

The short answer: Yes & No. It can be a little complicated, so let us explain:

It’s illegal for a carrier to raise your homeowners' insurance premium due to an Act of God peril – a weather event such as hail, wind, or a hurricane you couldn't plan for or protect your home from enduring.

However, your insurance premium could go up if it’s determined your home is located in an area prone to hail, wind, or other severe weather events. It could also go up if you file too many claims in a given time frame – though this point varies per carrier and policy.

Our advice: If you think you may have storm damage, you should schedule for a licensed and insured contractor to assess your home's exteriors. Experts like our Retex Roofing & Exteriors team can determine the severity of the damage and provide insight on whether or not it may be covered by insurance.

At Retex, we offer complimentary assessments to remediate any storm damage your home has experienced and bring you peace of mind quickly. Call us at 804-442-3314 if you have identified an issue or would like us to assess your home's exteriors post-storm.
