Established in 1847, this garden cemetery – named for the holly trees throughout – spans "135 acres of valleys, hills, and stately trees," according to its website.
Hollywood Cemetery is recognized as a registered arboretum and serves as the final resting place for James Monroe (3+4) and John Tyler (5), the 5th and 10th presidents of the United States, respectively. Notably, the National Park Service dedicated Monroe's Gothic-style cast iron canopy, commonly known as "the Birdcage" (4), as a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
Jefferson Davis, the Former President of the Confederate States of America, six Virginia governors, and two Supreme Court justices have also been laid to rest here, along with thousands of Confederate soldiers and generals from the U.S. Civil War. It continues to operate as a working cemetery, with "prominent authors, suffragists, and many deceased loved ones from the Richmond community and beyond" buried within its walls.
